You might be surprised to find out that sugar can have an addictive quality. Some people go beyond craving sugar, but actually have an addiction to the rush they get when they eat lots of sugar. If you eat sugary foods because you just can’t resist the taste, but still have the willpower to say no to sugary foods, or can stop eating the foods after a serving or two then you most likely have a normal relationship with sugar. But there are many people who take this relationship to an unhealthy level.
A sugar addict has almost an obsessive need for large quantities of sugar on a daily basis. They become anxious with a desire for the sugar and can become agitated if someone tries to stop them from getting to the sugar. The foods that sugar addicts crave are incredibly sweet and the portions they eat are incredibly large.
If you or someone you love has a habit of eating large quantities of very sweet foods, such as a plate full of donuts, a huge chunk of fudge, a few pieces of cheesecake, or even straight condensed milk, then you should talk to your doctor about your concerns regarding sugar addiction.
Once the sugar addict has their supply of sugar their mood becomes relaxed. And after they have eaten the sugary food they become almost manic. They may act irrational, and hyper, appearing almost to be high.
But after time the sugar leaves the system and the sugar addict becomes extremely irritable. Family members of sugar addicts have actually reported that they are frightened of their loved one’s reaction after they’ve eaten lots of sugar because they can be verbally and even physically abusive.
The sugar addict goes into a form of depression when the sugar has left their system, and the irritability soon turns to a craving for more sugar which starts the cycle all over again.
Not all sugar addicts are overweight. Although they eat lots of sugar, the sugar addict may not eat much of anything else. And some sugar addicts have a high metabolism which keeps the pounds off. When determining if you or a loved one is a sugar addict you need to look at their relationship with sugar and their mood before, during and after they have had sugar.
Sugar addiction not only affects a person’s mood and their relationships, it also affects their health. The large quantities of sugar and the up and down mood swings have an adverse affect on your health over time.
There are special diets that help wean people off their sugar addiction. Talk to your doctor and get some help if you feel you have an unnatural relationship to sugar.
